ENGLISH UNITS IN THE SWEDISH ARMY

A large number of Englishmen participated on the Swedish side during the Thirty Year’s War. Some of the English units are well documented in the National War Archive (Krigsarkivet) in Stockholm. This units underneath are only some of the English regiments that were organized in mainly in the 1630s.

George Cunningham’s Infantry Regiment (1630-1637)

This regiment is mentioned 60 times in the rolls of the National War Archive, Stockholm.
(1630: Vol. 37, 1631: Vols. 12-14, 16-21, 1632: Vols. 10-19)

Alexander Cunningham’s Infantry Regiment

Existed in two periods. 1629 it was mentioned once in the rolls,
While during the period 1638-1640 16 times. (1638: Vols. 3, 23, 25-28, 1639: 13, 15-21, 1640: Vols. 14 and 17).

Robert Cunningham’s Infantry Regiment

Mentioned several times in the rolls 1632-1637 (1632: Vols. 20-21, 1633: Vols. 11-22, 1634: Vols. 12-23, 1635, Vols. 20-26, 29-31, 1636: 15, 18, 20, 1637: Vol. 13).

Jakob (James) Ashley’s Regiment

Lord James Hamilton’s Regiment (“The English Army”)

Georg Fleetwood’s Infantry Regiment No. 1

Mentioned 56 times in the rolls 1631-1639 (1631: Vols. 16-21, 1632: Vols. 14-21, 1633: Vols. 11-22, 1634: Vols. 12-23, 1635: Vols. 1, 20-26, 28-30, 1637: Vol. 15, 1638: Vols. 21,23,26,27, 1639: Vols. 14 and 16

Georg Fleetwood’s Infantry Regiment No. 2

This regiment probably did not have English officers and soldiers.

Mentioned once in the rolls 1658 (1658: Vol. 9)
