Fox News published an interview on September 5, 2016 with Middle East expert Dr Walid Phares. The Obama administration according to Dr. Phares made three major mistakes in Syria since 2011.
The Obama administration should have and could have solved the Syria crisis in 2011 and 2012. The United States were still in Iraq that first year.
In 2013 Washington could have acted upon the chemical attacks by the Syrian regime and the red line. It didn’t.
Since then the Administration has chosen to be with Muslim Brotherhood linked militias instead of the initial more moderate and secular Free Syria Army.
Phares also argued that Russia has an Iran and a Hezbollah problem in Syria and that the Turkish advance and the Russian backed offensives could pit the two armies one against the other which is dangerous.
US Syria policy should change, Phares argued in the interview.
It is becoming more obvious by the day that the foreign policy of the Obama Administration is a failure. On the recent trip to Asia the American president was disrespected. The leading allies in Asia of the United States (Japan, South Korea) feel that they have to a great extent been abandoned by the United States. The pivot to Asia has been weak and the response to the military challenge of China in the South China Sea should have been firmer. North Korea remains a growing nuclear threat in East Asia.
