JAMES WOOLSEY: OBAMA ADMINISTRATION NOT ‘CALLING IT STRAIGHT’ ON TERRORISM

June 30, 2016

Washington Times on June 29, 2016, reported that former CIA Director James Woolsey criticized the Obama administration’s reluctance to assess the scope of the threat of radical Islamic terrorism in straightforward terms. Excerpts below:

“The administration has a narrative, and they follow the narrative, and if something doesn’t fit with the narrative, they fiddle around with it until it looks like it fits with the narrative,” Mr. Woolsey said on WMAL radio’s “Mornings on the Mall,” while discussing the June 28 terrorist attack on an airport in Istanbul.

Mr. Woolsey’s remarks came after WMAL co-host Brian Wilson asked him to react to a soundbite from CIA Director John Brennan’s recent congressional testimony, wherein Mr. Brennan warned that “our efforts have not reduced [ISIS’s] terrorism capability and global reach, and the group would have to suffer even heavier losses on territory, manpower and money for its terrorist capacity to decline significantly.”

“I think he was calling it straight, and the administration is not,” Mr. Woolsey said. “It’s good that he and other leaders, some of our military leaders, have been, I think, even more explicit. And they’re right. We cannot prevail just by doing what the Obama administration has been doing. And the Obama administration is causing a big problem by not talking clearly about what we are doing.”

Comment: The Obama administration’s handling of the terrorist threat to the United States is coming under severe criticism. The terrorist attacks continue and at the same time the Democratic leadership declares that Middle Eastern terrorist organization are almost defeated. The situation in Europe is similar. The number of terrorist attacks is growing. The June 28 attack on the Istanbul Atatuerk Airport occurred in an strategically important NATO country. Firmer measures are needed both from the United States and from European countries.

Meanwhile Secretary of State John Kerry faced swift criticism on June 29 for suggesting the terror attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport was evidence the Islamic State is getting “desperate” – an assessment one top Republican official said “defies reality.”

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mike McCaul, R-Texas, slammed the secretary’s assessment:

They’ve said they’re on the run for many years, and they’re not,” McCaul told Fox News. “I think the airstrikes have ramped up external operations … This is an unprecedented pace of terror in modern times. And so to say they’re on the run … absolutely defies reality.”

OBAMA AND CLINTON UNDER PRESSURE FOR BENGHAZI FAILURE

June 29, 2016

Fox News on June 29, 2016, reported on the 800-page Benghazi report blaming a “rusty bureaucratic process” for the Obama administration’s slow-moving response the night of the attack. The report said that despite orders from President Obama and then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to deploy assets in response to the attack on the compound to aid Ambassador Chris Stevens, his staff and security personnel, the first military force did not do so until more than 13 hours after the attack started. Excerpts below:

Republican committee members — let by Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C. — insisted their work was not political.

“Read the report,” Gowdy repeatedly said.

“You can read this report in less time than our fellow citizens were taking fire and fighting for their lives on the rooftops and in the streets of Benghazi,” he also said in a written statement.

The report faulted the Obama administration for a range of missteps before, during and after the 2012 attacks in Benghazi, Libya that led to the deaths of Stevens, foreign service officer Sean Smith and former Navy SEALs Ty Woods and Glen Doherty.

The report said one anti-terrorism security team known as the FAST unit sat waiting for three hours in Rota, Spain, as Marines changed “in and out of their uniforms four times,” and even debated whether they should carry personal weapons, according to one witness. All together, the report said, “it would take nearly 18 hours” for that team to move.

The report described a web of internal debates and hold-ups, including apparent State Department guidance that “Libya must agree to any deployment,” though Panetta would later say Libya approval was not necessary.

The report also said Clinton told the Egyptian prime minster they knew the attack had nothing to do with the film and was a planned attack – despite statements being made by her and others referencing the video.

Lawmakers contrasted the “heroism” of those on the ground with the discussions in Washington. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill., described the D.C. attitude as “near fecklessness.” He said, “They were more concerned about how they’re going to offend the Libyan government than how this rescue is going to take place.”

The report also showed:

During a White House meeting convened roughly three hours into the attack, “much of the conversation focused on the video.”

The forces that came to evacuate State Department and CIA officers that night were not fellow Americans, but a secret unit of former military officers from the Qaddafi regime, which the Obama administration had helped overthrow.

“Security deficiencies plagued the Benghazi Mission compound in the lead-up to September 2012.”

Panetta told the committee “an intelligence failure” occurred, while former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell also acknowledged an intelligence failure.

CONGRESSMAN MIKE POMPEO (R) OF KANSAS ON BENGHAZI: NO LEADERSHIP FROM OBAMA AND CLINTON

June 29, 2016

Congressman Mike Pompeo (R) of Kansas on June 28, 2016, reported on the release of the report of The Select Committee on Benghazi. Pompeo has served since its inception two years ago:

We have completed the most in-depth investigation into the events that took place before, during, and after the attack on the State Department facility at Benghazi. My Committee colleague Congressman Jim Jordan and I also write separately, drawing important conclusions from the facts brought to light by the Committee’s work.

I had the chance to speak with news outlets from KQAM’s Joseph Ashby Show to ABC’s Good Morning America. We spoke about the Committee’s report, along with my additional report with Congressman Jordan. Specifically, we discussed this Administration’s failure to respond adequately on the night of Benghazi and the cover up that followed. Ultimately, Hillary Clinton and President Obama put politics before the American people. Contrary to what the Clinton campaign has repeated over and over again, help might have been able to get to the American facilities at Benghazi, Libya, but the administration did not even try. They say the test of any leader is the 3 AM phone call—Hillary Clinton had hers and failed.

This afternoon I spoke with ¬¬¬KAKE in Wichita, the Blaze, and WIBW in Topeka. The fact is that when we might have been able to save American lives, no action was taken. Blaming a non-existent protest for the death of four Americans may be politically expedient, but it is morally reprehensible. Making excuses after the fact is even worse. We now know that Secretary Clinton was saying one thing to the Administration and her closest allies, while saying something entirely different to the American public—including the mothers and fathers of four dead Americans.

Kansans expect more. We expect our leaders to do their best to protect Americans who are doing dangerous work in dangerous places on our behalf. We expect that they will move heaven and earth when American lives are in danger. And we now know exactly what difference does it make to have leaders lead.

After two long years serving on the Select Committee on Benghazi, I wish I could tell you that we uncovered everything. Because of the Obama administration’s obstruction, we did not. But we now know this: Americans deserved better on the night of September 11, 2012 in Benghazi.

SOVJETVÄNNEN (S) SOM FÖRSTÖRDE SVENSKA SKOLAN

June 27, 2016

SEN. BOB CORKER ON BREXIT

June 26, 2016

Politico on June 26, 2016 reported on Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker’s comments on CNN that the Brexit vote reflects a similar sentiment in the United States…

“Almost the entire establishment in the UK was in the ‘remain’ camp. Look, there’s something in our society, it’s happening in Western societies, where there’s tremendous anxiety over economic stagnation, the whole issue of refugees and immigration that’s changing the context of countries and then this faceless bureaucracy that’s not really responding to people,” said Corker.

The Tennessee Republican defended Trump’s Scotland press conference, calling it “one of his best events,” when Trump said the falling pound would help his golf business…

Corker also said he’s “meticulously stayed out” of whether the Brexit vote is a wise development, but he added that he’d be “less than honest if I didn’t say that this creates for me some anticipation and a degree of excitement in that if seeing what has happened there can cause Western civilization, if you will, to realize that the direction we are going is not a good direction.”

The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee criticized President Barack Obama’s comments in April about any future United Kingdom trade agreement falling to the “back of the queue,” calling them “sophomoric threats.”

“I don’t imagine the people of the UK appreciated much another president from another country weighing in,” he said. “The fact is, if anything, my guess is the response of the American people is going to be to draw closer to Great Britain, to United Kingdom, or whatever is left of that.”

Comment: It should be noted that Corker in the CNN interview commented on the direction Western civilization is taking. It is not he good direction, he says.

It should in this connection be noted that there is economic stagnation in the West and growing unease about the Islamist terrorist threat to both the United States and Europe. For 8 years the Obama administration has been ignoring the advice followed by the United States since the Second World War. It is the advice by Yale Professor Nicholas Spykman, a leading classical geopolitical thinker, that the Eurasian rim is the key to Western security. As a result of the present weakness of the United States the West is today challenged by three aggressive empires: autocratic Russia, semi-totalitarian China and theocratic Iran/Persia, the latter an ancient enemy. Voters around the Atlantic Ocean are worried and protesting against the lack of response by Western bureaucracies to the increasingly strong challenges to the West by the three empires. Iran/Persia is the leading supporter in the Middle East of Islamist terrorism. Other parts of the West like for example Australia and Israel have reason to be especially concerned.

BERTIL HAGGMAN, “SWEDISH CENTER-RIGHT ANTICOMMUNISM 1963 – 1991 – NOTES BY A PARTICIPANT”

June 25, 2016

Bertil Haggman’s 2015 book (Kindle Direct Publishing) is timely. Since Nykonservatismen i USA (New Conservatism in the United States) in 1971 (with Claes G Ryn) the author has closely studied the political development in the United States.

An important breakthrough in the study of anti-communism in the United States was Professor Richard Gid Powers’ Not Without Honor (1995). It was superbly written and richly detailed. Moreover it restored the struggle against communism to its historic place in American life. The anticommunist movement in America was composed of a wide range of Americans – Jews, Protestants, blacks, Catholics, union leaders, businessmen and conservatives. Their struggle was rooted in knowledge and experience with the Communist system.

During the Cold War the United States militarily was under siege on many fronts at home and worldwide.

The new book treats anticommunism in a small country between 1963 and 1991. Leftist demonstrators at that time called for a socialist revolution both in the United States and Europe.

Haggman defended freedom and democracy in Asia during those dark days. He worked with South Vietnam’s Information Office in Stockholm, Sweden, to explain why Ho Chi Minh should be defeated.

This first volume of Bertil Haggman’s political memoirs will be followed by three more volumes. The story about Swedish center-right anticommunism needs to be told.

COLD WAR SWEDEN’S WEAK IRREGULAR DEFENSE PLANNING

June 23, 2016

Swedish businessman Alvar Lindencrona (1910 – 1981) according to journalist and author Mikael Holmström (b. 1955; ”Den dolda alliansen : Sveriges hemliga NATO-förbindelser”, paperback edition, 2015) was the leading figure of preparations for guerrilla warfare against the Soviets. The departments in the rudimentary organization called Stay Behind were according to Holmström:

First Department (military) Anders Grafström, Swedish Army

Second Department
(evacuation routes and exile Swedish bases) Thede Palm, Military Intelligence

Third Department (political and psychological warfare)      Unknown

Lindencrona was until 1964 with Thule Insurance Company and on the board of Saab-Scania. He also worked for the International Chamber of Commerce. Holmström names business executive Curt Steffan Giesecke (1921 – 2016) as his successor.

Meetings of the organization were held in an office in Stockholm and in Lindencrona’s private apartment. Social Democrat Prime Minister Tage Erlander (1901 – 1979) initiated the organization and successive social democratic ministers were in the political leadership of the small guerrilla warfare group. Other leading members of the leadership were trade union boss Arne Geijer (1910 – 1979) and the Director of the Employers Organization Bertil Kugelberg (1900 – 1991).

Military officers involved were among others Sune Gladh and Gunnar Areskoug. In 1996 Reinhold Geijer (1915 – 2009) went public on Swedish TV to reveal his involvement in the guerrilla command. He had been active in northern Sweden in the hotel business.

There were possibly five regional subgroups. The total organization personnel has been estimated at 50 to 150. General Carl Erik Almgren (1913 – 2001) estimated membership at 300 – 400. Outside support for the guerrilla organizations in the Scandinavian countries came mainly from the United Kingdom.

There has so far been no parliamentary investigation in Sweden of the group. This in a country that claims to be open and democratic. The Swedish guerrilla war preparations during the Cold War seem more like the order of the Prussian king for partisan and guerrilla warfare in 1813 against the French occupiers of Prussia and the rest of Germany. Nothing came out of it as guerrilla resistance cannot be ordered from above.

EN VÅLDSREVOLUTIONÄR HYLLAS PÅ TIDNINGARNAS KULTURSIDOR

June 16, 2016

ISLAMIC STATE SLEEPER CELLS IN EUROPE AND THE UNITED STATES

June 14, 2016

The Daily Mail newspaper in the United Kingdom on November 24, 2014, reported that according to Dimitri Bontinck IS was ready to unleash war on Europe using sleeper cells. Bontinck is a British army veteran renowned for rescuing youths from Islamic State. He is known as the ‘Jihadi Hunter’. Excerpts below:

Bontinck said to the Daily Mail:

It’s not the kids who are the principal danger – it’s the chiefs whom you never see in the videos. The mature men running this organization are deeply sinister, and extremely well-funded, and they have European countries such as Britain, France and Belgium in their sights.

He added:

Their aim is to take revenge against the west for what they view as an all-out assault on them, and they will strike when they are ready. I’ve been told by very influential sources that they have sleeper cells over here, and are preparing to unleash their war in Europe.’

Mr Bontinck, a Belgian national who is based in Antwerp, has completed seven missions to Syria to help rescue his son, 19-year-old Jejoen, along with other youths in the same position.

My greatest help has come from the French, Bontinck said, who are very proactive in getting their people out. They do a lot of their dealings through Qatar.

The massively wealthy Arab country has close links with France despite – controversially – being accused of indirectly funding IS as an enemy of Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad.

On potential attacks, the Belgian said, could range from a ‘lone wolf’ beheading in a crowded shopping centre or street, to a bomb plot using fertiliser stolen from farms.

Comment: The recent radical Islamist mass killing in Orlando, Florida, in June 2016 is a sign that there are also sleeper cells in the United States. The policy of the present American administration seems to mainly limited to drone strikes. It is the same policy that was used by the Clinton administration. The only difference was in the 1990s that instead of drones the administration used cruise missiles.

In an editorial in National Review recently the editors wrote that “It’s Time for a Long-Term Strategy to Utterly Crush Islamic Terrorism”:

The U.S. can no longer treat the Islamic State, a resurgent al-Qaeda, and other terrorist organizations as distant enemies. Islamic terrorists’ war on us has returned to American shores, and it will continue here as long as we refuse to exercise the tactics necessary to stamp it out.

This administration has refused to craft a coherent plan for defeating our enemies abroad, preferring to engage in small, disconnected missions on an as-needed basis. It is time for a long-term strategy. As long as terrorists have sanctuaries in which they can train, and from which they can recruit, Americans will continue to live under threat.

TERRORISM – VÅR TIDS KRIGFÖRING

June 13, 2016
